Blacktech: Passive Wi-Fi with Lower Energy Consumption Coming Soon

Recently, students from the School of Electronic Engineering at the University of Washington developed a new "power-free" WiFi technology that consumes less than one ten-thousandth of the current WI-FI. The technology developed by the University of Washington students is called "Passive Wi-Fi" (passive WIFI). The working principle of this new WIFI technology is similar to that of an RFID chip. The difference between current WIFI technology and power consumption to provide signals is that it uses electromagnetic backward transmission communication technology, and this new technology selectively reflects Radio waves, but also able to "suck" power from radio waves.

According to R&D personnel, the work of Passive WIFI is relatively simple, mainly divided into three steps. The first part is the need to install a simple device on the wall. This device can be used to send analog waves to the Passive WIFI sensor. The electricity of the new WIFI technology is mostly consumed in this process, and the sensor is almost no charge. The sensor will then receive simulations and then perform digital conversions to generate WIFI packets. The last one is that the device can transmit network data to mobile phones or routers at a speed of 11 Mbps per second.

Vamsi Talla, the project's researcher, said: "A device using Passive Wi-Fi technology does not transmit any signal itself, it only generates several Wi-Fi packets by reflection. Therefore, this One kind of wireless emission technology with very low energy consumption."

Another researcher involved in the project, Bryce Kellogg, said: “It is still difficult to say to what extent the technology will extend the battery, because the battery life is determined by many factors, such as Screen brightness, etc., but using Passive Wi-Fi technology will make the device have almost the same battery life as the Wi-Fi module."

And it is worth mentioning that the production cost of such equipment is still very low, and its cost is less than a dollar. At present, this technology has been nominated by the MIT Technology Review as the “2016 Top Ten Technology Breakthroughs” and has also been applied practically on the campus of the University of Washington. According to actual applications, this technology can be wall-mounted and connected to any WIFI device within 30 meters.
