Cirrus Logic recently introduced several surround sound codecs. According to Sanjay Voleti, these new audio codecs greatly simplify the design process and reduce the cumulative system cost for manufacturers because external analog-to-digital converters are no longer needed in the design. In addition, as DVD audio is more economically integrated into entry-level consumer audio and video receivers and car audio systems, more audio input enables consumers to import content from multiple audio sources into audio/video. The receiver is imported, for example, from a set top box, a video cassette recorder, a 5.1 input channel required for DVD audio playback, and the like. In the car environment, audio input can come from in-car navigation systems, cell phones, CD/DVD players, and radios.

Sanjay Volet said that the three surround sound codecs have powerful technical advantages. For example, the CS42448 has eight digital-to-analog converters with a complete serial port that supports all standard audio data formats and time division multiplexing modes. The CS42438 also has eight digital-to-analog converters, the CS42436 has six digital-to-analog converters, and the latter two have serial ports that only support time division multiplexing. Each digital-to-analog converter is 24-bit, supports sample rates up to 192 kHz, and has a dynamic range of up to 108 dB. All three products feature six 24-bit A/D converters, supporting sample rates up to 192 kHz and dynamic ranges up to 105 dB.
Each new codec has a multi-bit delta-sigma regulator to reduce out-of-band noise while separating the control port from the serial port supply for tight glue-free engagement with the digital signal processor. In addition, the CS42448 comes with Cirrus Logic's patented Popguard technology, which helps reduce the smashing noise caused by the current loop of the digital-to-analog converter, simplifying system design and reducing system cost.
The CS42436 and CS42438 are available in a 52-pin MQFP package and the CS42448 is available in a 64-pin LQFP package.
