GE troubles constantly, general lighting is not fun, smart lighting is hard to say

For GE, it has been a lot of trouble lately.

Following the announcement of withdrawal from the general lighting market in China and Asia, its future smart lighting business is also suffering from the loss of the “executive team”.

Jeff Bisberg gave up his work on GE Internet's IoT-related technology and turned to CEO of Illumitex, a LED plant lighting company.

Jeff Bisberg previously led GE's indoor positioning project based on LED lighting. Since December of last year, he has served as Chief Strategy Officer for Current, a GE energy and lighting company, where he is responsible for enterprise- and city-based IoT platforms and cloud technology platform projects.

On October 7, 2015, GE announced that it will spin off its LED lighting business, solar energy and energy storage technology to a newly established company, Current.

Since then, GE has launched key intelligent lighting products. Announced cooperation with Qualcomm to develop indoor positioning systems and target the retail industry. Even GE's LED street lights are moving toward smart street lights.

Jeff Bisberg is a key player in GE's push for its indoor lighting location technology in retail supermarkets.

In 2012, GE acquired Albeo, a company that specializes in LED lighting, and Jeff Bisberg is the CEO of the company. Since then, Jeff Bisberg has remained the CEO of the company until 2013 when he joined the indoor positioning project.

Indoor positioning technology based on LED lighting has become a new application market for LED technology in recent years. Sending signals to the in-store shopper's mobile phone via LED lighting, including sending some discounted promotional product information. Based on this technology, personalized service and big data analysis for customer purchase behavior.

Of course, there are many other applications for this technology. Including inventory and asset management, retail trend analysis, etc.

Although GE has been promoting the commercialization of this technology, it has never disclosed customer information that is being tested on this technology. Last month, GE announced that it was installing trials at Wal-Mart and Sainsbury, but did not disclose any additional information.

GE's competitor Philips has also determined that several customers are experimenting with related technologies, including the CapitalLand shopping mall in Singapore, Carrefour in Lille, France and the retail chain in Dubai. Earlier this month, Philips announced that it would disclose the technology and license more luminaire manufacturers.

At present, this technology still faces many obstacles. This may include customer privacy, possible patent disputes, and even the ultimate user customer may not want to use this technology at all.

Now, many companies are trying more possible solutions. Philips prefers visible light communication technology, and some manufacturers prefer to embed a Bluetooth module in the fixture.

In the field of indoor positioning, the level of competition is no less than that of the LED general lighting market.

At the end of 2013, Apple introduced high-profile iBeacon, using Bluetooth technology to help electronic devices transmit data within a short distance; many companies have introduced similar technologies.

In October 2014, Baidu invested $10 million in indoor map provider IndoorAtlas. Other large companies involved in indoor positioning include Cisco, IBM, Aruba, and others.

In August 2015, Tencent announced a strategic investment in Sensewhere, an indoor positioning company. Alibaba also went online to visit APP Ali Street in the same year. Currently, it can provide indoor maps, find stores, parking fees, payment, shopping mall promotions and other functions.

However, industry insiders also reminded that indoor positioning is still too specialized, so it is still a "niche direction."
