According to IHS Markit data, the flexible active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display shipments increased more than three times in 2017 due to the surge in market demand, and accounted for 54.6% of the total shipment revenue of AMOLED panels.
In 2017, the revenue of flexible AMOLED panels reached US$12 billion, compared with US$3.5 billion in 2016, an increase of 250%. However, the revenue of rigid AMOLED panels has shrunk by 14% during the same period. In the third quarter of 2017, Samsung Display began to supply flexible AMOLED displays for iPhone X, which greatly boosted the overall AMOLED shipment revenue. LG Display, BOE and Kunshan Visionox are also starting to produce flexible AMOLED panels for smartphones and smart watches in 2017, helping the market grow.
"High-end smartphone brands have increasingly adopted flexible AMOLED panels in order to achieve unique product design," said Jerry Kang, senior principal analyst at IHS Markit. “Although the number of flexible AMOLED panel suppliers is increasing, the supply capacity is still concentrated in Samsung.â€
In 2017, flat flexible AMOLED panels accounted for about half of the total shipments of flexible AMOLEDs. This is a change. Before 2016, curved surfaces have always been the mainstream shape of flexible AMOLED displays.
“As Apple uses flat flexible AMOLEDs for the iPhone X, the shape design of mobile displays has diversified,†Kang added.
According to IHS Markit's latest AMOLED & Flexible Display Information Service, the demand for flexible AMOLED panels in 2018 is not expected to grow as fast as its supply. “In a few years, in an effort to alleviate potential oversupply, many panel makers are trying to develop other innovative form factors, such as folding or crimping terminals,†Kang added.
