Catalyst introduces 2 watt LED driver (Figure)

Catalyst Semiconductor has announced a new 2W LED driver for high-power backlight applications. The CAT4240 boost converter delivers up to 750mA switching current and 38V output voltage for driving a wide range of backlighting applications – from single-string 1W LEDs to multiple strings of low-power LEDs. The CAT4240 delivers 2W of output power from a 3V-5V supply and up to 5W from a higher 9V to 12V supply when powered from a separate supply. In addition, the device uses a low noise, high switching frequency circuit design, and integrates all the functions required for the application, eliminating the need for additional external components for soft-start and overvoltage protection, greatly reducing noise and saving board space. . Most high-voltage boost converters use a simple frequency-variable design. This approach will result in a wide range of redundant harmonics that are not easily filtered or eliminated by the user; the CAT4240 uses a fixed frequency switching circuit architecture (1MHz), which is ideal for low noise applications. In addition, the device's built-in high-voltage CMOS output stage can drive a long string (total voltage up to 38V) of accurately biased and regulated LEDs at low input voltages with conversion efficiencies as high as 87%. To eliminate unwanted inrush currents during power-up, the CAT4240 integrates a soft-start control circuit. If the LED is open-circuit damaged, the CAT4240's internal overvoltage protection circuit forces the device into a low-power mode, limiting the output voltage to a safe level without any external components. The above two features have been fully integrated, eliminating the need for external components and associated costs, and saving board space. Designers can use DC voltage, logic signals or pulse width modulation signals to control LED brightness when using the CAT4240. Features:
