The new solution helps system developers reduce the time spent on development steps: from specification analysis to hardware and software development and motor characterization. For example, inverter prototype development time can be reduced from two to three years to one year, and the cycle is shortened by more than 50%, thereby greatly reducing development cycle and cost.

Carbon dioxide emissions are rising due to abnormal weather events and increased levels of environmental pollution caused by global warming. For the automotive industry, the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and the large-scale adoption of electric systems (such as HEVs and EVs) as soon as possible will be further enhanced.

In an electric system, the main function of the inverter is to convert direct current (DC) electricity into alternating current, and control the motor to adjust the speed and current according to changes in driving conditions. Therefore, in order to improve the fuel and power efficiency of the inverter system, in addition to the need to miniaturize the inverter, a high-precision and high-efficiency motor drive system is required to mount the electric motor in a limited space of various types of engine rooms. Renesas Electronics has been developing a portfolio of inverter solutions for a long time. In 2014, Renesas developed a solution that achieved a size of 2.9L at a rated 50 kW level. To meet the growing demand for large-output motors for large vehicles, Renesas Electronics has introduced a new 100 kW inverter solution with motor calibration tools to expand its product lineup to support these high-power motors.

Key features of the new 100 kW inverter solution:

(1) Industry-leading 3.9-liter small design grade that reduces the weight of the inverter system and can be installed in a smaller space

It uses an IGBT wafer fabrication module with a built-in temperature sensor. With its built-in temperature sensor's response speed and precision temperature management technology, the size and weight of the heat sink in the inverter system can be greatly reduced.

In addition, the master MCU also has an enhanced motor control unit (EMU) built in. The dedicated circuit replaces the CPU to directly control the motor. In this way, the CPU can be used to process an external vehicle control unit (called an electronic control unit, ECU), including a DC/DC converter, a second motor, and a cooling pump. This enables efficient automotive ECU integration to improve the use of limited space in the engine compartment.

(2) Reduced development cycle by more than 50% with software that allows rapid evaluation of actual vehicles

In addition to hardware, the inverter solution includes motor calibration tools for improved motor performance for efficient motor operation. With this tool, system manufacturers can immediately evaluate the inverter system in real vehicles, shortening the development of three to two years of inverter system prototypes to just one year, and shortening the cycle by more than 50%.

(3) Effectively improve the fuel/power efficiency of HEV/EV through professionally optimized devices

The new IGBT/FRD devices reduce conduction losses and switching losses, and the new inverter solution reduces current losses by approximately 12% (Note 1).

With the main components of Renesas Electronics designed for HEV and EV, the new solution reduces the power loss of the inverter by approximately 10% (Note 1), thus improving motor efficiency and ultimately helping to improve the inverter system. Fuel/electricity efficiency. The new solution is equipped with the RH850/C1H MCU family with an industry-proven resolver-to-digital converter (RDC) function that converts the motor's angle of rotation from analog to digital. The RH850/C1H enables high precision motor control up to 12 to 16 bits. The solution also includes the R2A25110 pre-driver IC (Note 2) with micro-isolator technology for high-speed switching.

Renesas Electronics will introduce the 100 kW inverter solution at the Renesas DevCon Japan 2017 conference and demonstrate with the new solution.
