Interview with DJI Wang: Convert RoboMasters to Engineer's F1 and World Cup

On the afternoon of the 28th, the champion of 2016 RoboMasters National Undergraduate Robotics Competition sponsored by DJI Innovation was born at the Spring Bay Sports Center of the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center, which means that this two-month robot competition officially came to an end. The competition attracted a total of 228 teams from more than 160 universities worldwide, and nearly 7,000 young engineers signed up to participate. After the division match and the kick-off match screening, the top 32 teams stood out and reached the final stage.

The RoboMasters competition is an important project in Dajiang. Wang Wei started preparations four years ago and officially became a national open competition for university students across the country last year. Wang Hao is very satisfied with the performance of this year’s event. He thinks “fun and good-looking” is the result he wants.

Regarding the inspiration for hosting the RoboMasters competition, Wang Hao did not say that it was from the Robocon game that had produced the "most profound impact" on him (when Wang Hao was interviewed by the media). But unlike Robocon's more traditional robotics competitions, RoboMasters has designed game-style strategic offense and defense and scoring rules. Compared with the first game last year, this year's RoboMasters has upgraded its venue and competition system, which has greatly improved the visibility of the site.

Every time the RoboMasters is held, it will cost thousands of dollars to Dajiang, and it will be almost no return. Some people comment on this move as purely a personal feeling of Wang Hao. Others think this is an expensive job fair.

After this year's RoboMasters game, Wang Ji, CEO of DJI Innovations and RoboMasters, received an exclusive interview with Lei Feng. He expressed his vision for RoboMasters - imaging RoboMasters is a top-level event like Formula 1 or World Cup. Engineers and inventors became the star of the crowd.

Lei Fengwang: What was the original idea to do RoboMasters?

Wang Hao : I participated in the RoboCon robot competition before starting my business and benefited from it. This is a platform that can nurture young people, but RoboCon's viewing is not good, and the theme of each year is changing. I want to do a very observing robot game, emphasizing the competitive nature, and let everyone see even more cool and fun.

Lei Feng Network (search "Lei Feng Net" public concern) : From the perspective of viewing, this year's RoboMasters introduced many new rules. Can you introduce this idea?

Wang Wei: Creating a competitive robot game is a brand-new challenge. The rules of the game need to be established from scratch. In fact, the current rules of the game have not yet been iteratively good, and they are still in the groping stage. However, by constantly playing the game, these rules will tend to be more exciting and more reasonable.

This year's rules of the game were designed in March and it was iterated once again after the July division. In the future, I think this game will evolve slowly. It is very important to change things and improve everything. However, everyone must be familiar with this game. It cannot be that the rules are constantly changing, just like football does not have to mention everyone. Knowing what the rules are, our robot game can also do this, but the map is different.

Lei Feng network: So RoboMasters will become a bit like eSports competition? The first time the audience was also heard at the scene, it was like watching War3 (Blizzard launched the real-time strategy game “Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne,” and the player is often referred to as War3).

Wang Wei: It can be said that we are also in the process of creating a new type of competitive sports, and I think that the final level of these elements we designed will gradually exceed the number of traditional sports events. Next year we want to make those bullets flash and make them feel better. In fact, we are all developing these props, and the results should be very good. In addition, because the technical team of Dajiang only made preparations for six months, another year of preparations for the next year, and some iterations and improvements on the basis of the existing ones, I think the competition will be a lot better.

The robots of the two teams are fighting at the bridge, and the robots are confronted with live ammunition. Each robot has a blood plate. After being hit by a bullet, the robot will lose blood. Once the amount of blood is zero, the robot will die.

Lei Fengwang: What did Dajiang's technical team do in RoboMasters? Will you take this opportunity to develop new products?

Wang Wei: We mainly developed the image transmission system of the stadium, a set of scoring system, and the integrated control system of the venue. For example, we used a robot global positioning system to allow the game to behave like a game with a small map to know the location of each robot. At present, DJI has more than 30 people specialized in operating these systems of RoboMasters. It is to maintain the system's update iterations to prevent any loopholes in the game.

Dajiang did not specify any equipment or hardware threshold for the players. The equipment provided by Dajiang to the players is mainly based on the basic motor and chassis. After a period of time, many teams slowly begin to replace the parts we provide with the parts they made. This is what we hope to see.

In fact, RoboMasters has technical challenges for the organizers and contestants. To ensure technicality and appreciation, we must certainly not use our open source technology and we must not allow players to start from scratch. So need to provide some technical support so that they can play on a basis. And we encourage players to digest our technical help into their own, so that things can be learned quickly. If Dajiang has any technology it can use, it is very convenient to use it.

All the robots were designed by the participating teams freely. DJI provided open-source technologies including mechanical and electronic control of the chassis. The participating teams freely developed these open source technologies.

Lei Feng network: RoboMasters contestants are science and engineering students, Dajiang wants to select engineers from it?

Wang Wei: Dajiang’s work is also done by excellent young people. To let these future engineers know more about Dajiang is actually a good return.

RoboMasters is a comprehensive game with a large scale. It can be said that almost half of the students in science and engineering can find his place in this game. I think this thing can even become a very important part of college students who cultivate mechanical and electronic specialty in our education system.

RoboMasters is also a good social practice. It is similar to entrepreneurship. It requires technology research and development, team management, and tactics and strategies. It is a very challenging project. So, the students who won the competition in this competition, I think they will perform better than others in the actual project challenges. Students who have come out of RoboMasters, I believe, are definitely better than regular graduates. However, compared with mature engineers, of course, it takes a while.

We do intend to pay more attention to the RoboMasters player group and find more people who are interested in Dajiang to join Dajiang. Sometimes a very important product line can be achieved with a key talent. In this sense, it is worthwhile to invest tens of millions in this game.

Lei Fengwang: So the outside world's comments are correct. Is RoboMasters really an "expensive job fair"? Can you comment on the financial situation of RoboMasters?

Wang Xi : I feel that the original intention of RoboMasters is a driving force for me to do a cool thing and create a world that I think is beautiful in the mind, just like the many beautiful worlds that Miyazaki created. Miyazaki's greatness lies in his creation of an imaginary world. There are a lot of very beautiful factors. Many of them are about flying. The cities of Sky, Valley of the Wind, and Spirited Away have created fantastic stories. One world. In fact, I think that those young people who like technology have their own fantasy world. For me, RoboMasters was a fantasy world when I was young. But at that time it was impossible to achieve, and now there is a chance to realize this world. , so it is a very good thing. And this world can let everyone not only find fun, but also allow everyone to play their own ability, which is Gabriel without harm. Of course, everyone should also agree with this idea and work together to achieve it.

We hope to do something new through our own intelligence in this real world. In fact, this thing itself is a feast of engineers, a feast of inventors. Last year I also said that we are in a society where there are no shortages of acting stars and sports stars. However, we have not yet become celebrities by doing things. When we turned on the TV, we could not find an intellectual sport that allowed engineers and inventors to become stars. I hope that RoboMasters can shape such national idols as Yao Ming and Liu Xiang, and that he can also produce such respected inventors and entrepreneurs as Jobs.

In fact, in the long run, we also hope that we can push this competition into a Formula 1 racing car, or be ambitious, just like the current soccer world cup. Being a science and technology event with a wide range of influence can make the pursuit of excellence in technology and creativity become a popular trend.

Of course, to do anything is not a simple one-way investment. Everything should be balanced with input and output. RoboMasters must be made. There must be a surplus in the end. RoboMasters is not yet balanced. It is invested tens of millions each year. It has invested 30-50 million yuan this year. The government has given us more than 10 million funding, and we have gradually had some commercial cooperation.

I was thinking, for example, that we have done this competition, is it possible to do a series of derivative toys, or equipment. For example, when we were playing four-wheel-drive vehicles as a child, it was still a four-wheel drive vehicle. Do you think this thing should be upgraded? RoboMasters are more mature and can launch competitive equipment kits that can be played by all ages. If this toy is doing well, can it also earn some money? This kind of thing is better than playing online games a lot!

This will surely be done after a further iteration of the rules of the game in one year!

Lei Fengwang: You attach great importance to RoboMasters and may exceed the imagination of the public. Which parts of the game were designed by you personally?

Wang Hao: It 's the most creative idea I gave, but in the process, the team has been iterating on this rule, and now it has greatly improved from the original idea. The initial idea was hit with live ammunition and used bullet acceleration. The deduction of blood is my idea. Many forms of melee and air-to-air combat are also my ideas. More detailed designs like the "Hero Robot" unit and so on are all spent by the team for a long time.

The electronic, mechanical, computer vision technologies and drone control technologies involved in the competition actually do a lot of work. Compared with last year, because of the addition of some new elements, there is still progress. This time we also introduced the latest technology in drones into the game, but after all, drones are still relatively short for many players, and they are not very skilled. I think they will have a big next year. breakthrough.

We must have the most advanced technology to allow students to have a good exercise, but also a very exciting game, and have a large audience, I hope more people to participate in this game than to play Online games have more gains!

This year, RoboMasters added drones and formed a ground-to-air battle. The drone’s high-altitude perspective provided the battlefield global information for other robot operators and played an important role in the entire operation, but due to the drone’s operational requirements. Lei Fengwang: Last question, you made a speech on the final of RoboMasters last year. Why didn’t we not have a speech this year, and we quietly presented a prize together with a group of people?

Wang Hao: Actually, I really am a person who does not like to "run my own business". When we came out on the platform last year, there were many sayings like "Internet thinking". Of course, I don't think anyone is paying attention to the real value and innovation opportunities that China has created. There are feelings and emotions; on the other hand, it is actually more important to hope for support. RoboMasters contest, I hope everyone started to pay attention to this game.

DJI has changed greatly in public relations and communication in the past year. There are also dedicated teams to do these things. You see that the audience and media of this year's game are much larger than last year. I think that being able to do things well behind the scenes is the most important thing.
