Acer wants to take a 15% share of tablet

On December 2nd, Beijing time, according to foreign media reports, Acer chief executive Gianfranco Lanci said in an interview in Chongqing yesterday that it expects global tablet sales will reach 40 million to 50 million next year. Taiwan, and Acer's goal is to occupy 10% to 15% of them.

Lanchi said that the development of tablet PC products is part of Acer's "natural evolution" process. If the goal of selling 7.5 million units next year can be achieved, it will be more than twice as JPMorgan’s predictions for the company will help challenge the sales of RIM’s PlayBook and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Steven Tseng, Asia analyst for the Royal Bank of Scotland in Taipei, pointed out: “Acer has been very active talking about the tablet market, but Apple still dominates the market. In addition to the price, it is difficult to see the Acer’s There are other differences between the products or where they can overcome the iPad. If they can produce cheap models like the netbook domain, they may be successful. They are very good at scale production methods."

However, Zeng Xuliang’s stock rating on Acer is still “held,” in part because of concerns that the new tablet PC products may not be able to offset the decline in netbook sales.

Acer released three tablet computers last month, two using the Google Android operating system and the other using Microsoft's Windows software.

Ranci said that the price of these tablets is between $299 and $599, depending on configuration, screen size, and connection performance. The iPad currently sells for $499 to $829 in the United States.

Emerging markets Acer’s competitors include Samsung and RIM, which launched the Galaxy Tab in September of this year, and the latter plans to launch the 7-inch Tablet’s BlackBerry PlayBook in the next quarter.

Lanci said: "The current competition does exist, we will go all out. We have an advantage in product design and development. We also have advantages in the sales channels. Our advantage in emerging markets may be more than other companies."

Tablets can fill the gap between laptops and smart computers. In April of this year, Apple introduced the Tablet PC iPad. In the first 80 days of listing, sales have reached 3 million units, accounting for 95% of the Tablet PC market.

Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, said in October that devices such as the PlayBook “had been doomed to fail when it was launched,” because the devices are too small to compete with the 9.7-inch iPad.

User Needs Ranchi counters Jobs's comments that there is room for sales for both tablet PCs. He said: "It depends on the user's needs. Although the 10-inch tablet is a very good solution for home or office, the 7-inch tablet is also a very good solution for those who travel or have different needs. ”

Lanci said that Acer will begin selling tablet PCs manufactured in Shanghai and its neighboring factories in the first quarter of next year. However, he also said that the production of these products may be adjusted to the factory in Chongqing. Acer signed a contract with the Chongqing Municipal Government yesterday to establish its global laptop production base and its second operational headquarters in China. This is also the only compound base for Acer’s global strategic layout.

Ranke revealed that the Chongqing plant will have the capacity to produce 30 million to 40 million notebook computers or netbooks per year, and will produce smart phones and tablet computers. The plant will help Acer to nearly double its sales, making China's market revenue reach one-fourth of Acer’s total revenue within three years, reaching more than 10% of the forecast for next year.

Netbooks Will Not Destroy Lanchi said that China may surpass the United States to become the world's largest computer market. According to market research firm IDC, in the third quarter, Acer currently holds a 13% share of the global PC market, second only to Hewlett-Packard.

Ranci said that the growth in sales of tablet computers will not stop the company's netbook business. He said: "We don't think the netbook market is dying or subsiding, except for the US market. In the netbook market outside the United States, we still see very good growth. We think these two products can coexist. We think of tablets. It is another opportunity for the future development of the PC market. Tablet PCs will not replace other devices."
