Semtech, a mixed-signal semiconductor supplier, recently announced the SC442, the company's first 10-channel white LED driver with integrated 3A boost power switch. The device is packaged in an ultra-small, ultra-thin 4x4x0.6mm 28-pin MLPQ package that can drive up to 120 LEDs with up to 30mA per channel. Its high-density package, small external filter components, wide operating voltage range, and high efficiency meet the needs of space-constrained LED-backlit LCD displays and LCD TVs. High-density LED drivers are also ideal for ultra-bright displays with brightness levels above 500 nits for medical, industrial, aerospace and navigation markets, as well as digital signage applications.
The device expands the popular SC44x family of LED drivers from the company and is suitable for large LCD backlight applications. With an input voltage range of 4.5V to 21V, the SC442 can be powered by a Li-Ion battery pack or a 5V, 12V or 18V regulated supply. The SC442 can output up to 42V and drive up to 12 white LEDs per channel. The device is compatible with a boost or SEPIC (boost/buck) topology. In addition, when the input voltage is greater than the output voltage, it can be seamlessly converted to bypass (or linear) mode. Its synchronization function eliminates the intermodulation noise that occurs in backlight systems that use multiple driver ICs, such as large LCD TVs with LED backlights. Other features include overheating, overload, LED open circuit protection, and configurable LED short circuit protection.
Steve Hawley, product marketing manager for LED lighting and display at Semtech, said: "LCD system designers are looking for the largest and brightest viewing area to minimize the impact on chassis size and system heating. SC442 is the next generation Format, high-brightness LCD displays offer high brightness, low loss and small size solutions."
PWM dimming methods up to 50kHz eliminate audible noise problems. The internal DC-DC current mode controller dynamically maintains the optimum LED output voltage. For smaller panel designs, each channel can also be turned off independently. The driver provides LED open circuit protection, configurable LED short circuit protection, and overtemperature protection. The controller's switching frequency can be set from 200kHz to 1MHz for optimum efficiency and L/C filtering size.
The SC442 LED driver is packaged in the MLPQ-UT28 package, and the exposed heat sink at the bottom provides excellent heat dissipation. The SC442 is a lead-free, halogen-free product that is fully RoHS compliant.
