LED-backlit LCDs are expected to become the mainstream of the global LCD market in 2010, a time delay from the previous forecast of 2009.
Sources pointed out that the strong demand for LEDs in notebook computers and LCD TVs occupies most of the current LED supply, and the remaining LEDs are not enough to meet the needs of backlit display panels.
The price will become another bottleneck that hinders LED-backlit LCDs from becoming the mainstream in the market. The source also said that the price difference between the 18.5-inch LED backlight and the CCFL-backlit display panel is about $5, while the retail price of a 18.5-inch LED-backlit LCD display is about $30-50 higher than the CCFL-backlit display.
At present, LED-backlit notebook PC shipments account for 60-70% of total notebook PC shipments. In 2010, LED-backlit LCD TV shipments are expected to account for 15-20% of total LCD TV shipments.
