FCI , a leading manufacturer of high-speed I/O fiber and copper interconnect systems, has developed a 12-channel on-board optical module ( OBT ) capable of transmitting 25Gb/s per channel. A single optical module unit has 12 transmission channels and 12 receiving channels. This design is designed to minimize the required footprint of the PCB substrate while allowing for ease of application and disassembly or repair.
Minimize signal loss, and the connection of the input and output onboard optical modules is achieved through a high-density front-panel fiber-optic cable system. The system is equipped with a small-sized fiber optic adapter and multi-fiber cable assembly that provides port-to-port density of 12.5 mm and fiber optics of 12–48 per port.
The onboard optical module unit uses a new pluggable optical interface and lens-based coupling components to easily attach and remove fiber optic cables. The onboard fiber optic transceivers are connected to the PCB via pluggable optical interfaces and are quick and easy to assemble and disassemble when needed.
" FCI 's new on-board transceivers are designed to address the emerging trends and hardware designers' needs," said Sven Otte, engineering manager/director of FCI Optics. "These trends and requirements, such as minimizing PCB surface "Occupy space, cancellation of high-speed signals on the backplane to minimize signal loss, access to 25Gb / s+ per channel, and ease of application, use and replacement are all addressed in our OBT package."
While the OFC / NFOEC onboard optical module demonstration will illustrate the 12-channel capability, the OBT configuration can also be used for lower bandwidths, for example, a 4-channel operation with 25Gb/s transmission capability per channel may be the preferred configuration. Other custom configurations are available based on customer needs and requirements.
