OSRAM acquires LED Engin Inc. to actively deploy special lighting business

Shanghai, China, June 08, 2017 – Osram announced the acquisition of LED Engin Inc., a US LED supplier. Headquartered in San Jose, Calif., the company specializes in ultra-bright, ultra-compact solid-state lighting solutions for professional markets such as entertainment lighting, UV, gardening, white light and medical lighting applications. Most of its products use LED chips from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors (OS). LED Engin will be integrated into the Professional and Industrial Lighting Applications (PIA) of OSRAM's Specialty Lighting Division (SP). Currently, the company has nearly 30 employees and annual sales of approximately $10 million.

Hans-Joachim Schwabe, CEO of OSRAM Special Lighting, said: "With the new opportunities brought by LED Engin, we are able to offer our customers customized lighting solutions. LED Engin products are suitable for all major applications of special lighting. It is an ideal benefit for our existing product portfolio."

LED Engin's products are used in applications where powerful compact LED sources or custom LEDs are required, such as restaurants, shops, museums and galleries. The company also supplies lighting products for the horticultural market and provides powerful UV LEDs for industrial applications such as printing, UV curing and dental. At the same time, LED Engin is working with ClayPaky and ADB to enhance OSRAM's value chain in the field of stage entertainment lighting. ClayPaky and ADB are both Osram's professional brands that provide stage lighting, concerts, events, theatres and TV studio lighting.

Aspheric Lenses

A spherical lens refers to a constant curvature from the center to the edge of the lens, while a non-spherical lens continuously changes the curvature from the center to the edge.

The aspheric lens has a radius of curvature that changes with the central axis to improve optical quality, reduce optical components, and reduce design costs. Aspheric lenses have unique advantages over spherical lenses, so they are widely used in optical instruments, imaging, and optoelectronics industries, such as digital cameras, CD players, and high-end microscopy instruments.

This lens has a better radius of curvature and can maintain good aberration correction to obtain the required performance. The application of aspheric lenses brings excellent sharpness and higher resolution.
